Prayers for Climate Change

Stand with vulnerable children through prayer and climate action

Jump to: Climate change prayers | Real-world stories: Myanmar | How you can help children facing climate change

Climate change refers to the long-term warming of our planet – and for decades, it has posed a serious and growing threat to life on Earth. Its effects are no longer distant or abstract. They are real, devastating, and deeply felt by communities across the globe.

For those living in poverty, rising temperatures and increasingly severe rainfall often mean crop failure, extreme weather events, and the destruction of homes and livelihoods. Children and families already struggling are pushed further into crisis.

Read on to discover how you can stand in solidarity with affected communities through the power of prayer. And learn how your support can bring hope to those experiencing the harshest impacts of a changing climate.

Climate change prayers

As Christians, we feel called to care for God's creation. Prayer is where we begin - not with empty words, but with hearts ready to act. Here are a few simple prayers you can use as you lift up children and our planet before God.

Prayer for children

"Heavenly Father, we cry out to You for the millions of people around the world who are hungry, displaced, or in danger because of climate change. Be with each child, each person, Lord. Give them your hope and comfort, and the food they need to thrive. Help us be part of Your healing work in this world. Amen."

Prayer for support

"Gracious God, we lift up every World Vision staff member and volunteer working in places hit by drought, flooding, and disaster. Strengthen their hands, protect their health, and renew their spirits. May they feel Your presence as they serve with compassion and courage. Guide their decisions, multiply their impact, and help them reflect Your love to the children and families they support. Amen."

Be with each child, each person, Lord. Give them your hope and comfort, and the food they need to thrive.

Prayer for hope

"Heavenly Father, in the face of fear, please bring hope. To every child displaced, to every family grieving, let Your light shine through the darkness. Remind them that they are not forgotten; that they are seen and know You are with them. Help us to join in your plan to bring hope to those who need it today. Amen."

Prayer for action

"Lord, we pray for those in positions of power - governments, policymakers, and world leaders. Give them wisdom to make decisions that protect the vulnerable and steward the Earth wisely. Stir their hearts to act out of compassion, and to act now. Raise up leaders who listen, who lead boldly, and who honour You in their service. Amen."

A Journey Towards Environmental Restoration: U Myint’s Story

U Myint, a 53-year-old, has witnessed many changes in his community and environment over the past decade. His village lies in Myanmar's dry zone and is surrounded by 3000 acres of natural forest. This forest has faced severe challenges from soil erosion and deforestation.

Prayer

"Fifteen years ago, our village began experiencing the adverse effects of climate change," U Myint recalls.

"Irregular rain patterns and low rainfall posed serious threats to our farming activities. Additionally, the once-vibrant forest areas deteriorated due to unsystematic cutting for firewood and charcoal, coupled with a lack of awareness about environmental regeneration."

"That same year, Mrs. Tony, a Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) expert from World Vision, visited us and introduced us to FMNR techniques," U Myint says. "Along with other farmers, I attended the training, learning the art of pruning tree branches without damaging the tree stem. This method promotes better tree growth, facilitates inter-forest multiplication, and provides additional benefits such as food for animals and wood for cooking fuel.”

Thanks to techniques like these, U Myint's community is fighting back against the impact of climate change on their land.

In 2015, the village's efforts received a significant boost with the launch of the Improved Economic Livelihoods and Environmental Management (IELEM) project by World Vision. This project focused on various areas, including natural resource management and environmental care. U Myint and other community members participated in environmental management and regeneration sessions, leading to the establishment of a nursery in the village, tree plantations to fill gaps in the natural forest, soil conservation efforts, and the construction and renovation of small gully dams.

Reflecting on this journey, U Myint expressed his deep gratitude for the support and interventions that have helped the village adapt and thrive.

"Through collective actions and the use of locally adapted environmental techniques, our community is creating a greener, more sustainable future for ourselves and future generations," he shares gladly.

How you can help children affected by climate change

Climate change is making childhood harder than it should be. Around the world, children are facing new challenges:

  • Children are forced to flee their homes due to flooding, hurricanes, and drought
  • Children are going hungry as crops fail and food prices rise
  • Children are missing school because of environmental disasters
  • Children are facing health risks from heatwaves, unclean water, and poor air quality

But there is hope – and you can be part of it.

When you sponsor a child through our Child Sponsorship programme, you support long-term, climate-smart solutions. Your sponsorship helps communities grow more food using sustainable farming techniques like FMNR, access clean water even in times of drought, and keep children in school and healthy – despite the challenges of a changing climate.

Your support helps families not just survive climate change, but adapt to it, and thrive in spite of it.

Sponsor a child today and help them build a resilient future – one that's full of opportunity.
