Children like Achol - displaced by natural disasters

Achol, 17, lives in South Sudan with her two-year-old son Kuech. As a teenage mother living in a country crippled by conflict, it was already a challenge to get by. But things got worse when flooding destroyed her home and entire village.

“Due to the flood, we were drinking that same flood water,” explains Achol, who without access to nutritious food or clean water, had no other option. Kuech became critically ill, but thankfully Achol took him to World Vision's health centre where they both received supplements and temporary shelter to help them recover from the damage.

Children like Exius - facing malnutrition

Exius is a 10-month-old baby girl from Haiti. She was diagnosed with severe malnutrition, worrying her mother, Duvenise, who didn't know how to take care of her malnourished baby.

She joined the World Vision Mother's Club in her area, which is working to fight malnutrition. Duvenise learnt how to keep Exius healthy with nutritious food and proper medical attention. 

Thanks to World Vision's intervention, many children have recovered from malnutrition, including Exius. Duvenise explains, "No words can describe my feelings because baby is happy," she explains.

Children like Joshua - living in extreme poverty

Joshua, nine, and his family live in Kenya where prolonged droughts are causing the loss of livestock and crop failures. Families like Joshua’s rely on agriculture as their main source of income, meaning that lack of rainfall has driven communities into poverty.

To combat this, World Vision is introducing climate-smart agriculture techniques, helping Joshua’s family enjoy a nutritious diet all year round and even sell the leftover crops. With the income, Joshua can go to school and continue his education.

Children like Sofia - caught up in conflict

Since the Ukraine conflict started, we have been helping Ukrainian families access food, education, healthcare, psychological support and more. 

Sofia, eight, attends child clubs that are run by Youth Movement Be Free and supported by World Vision. The child and youth clubs give children a chance to learn and play games, aiming to support their mental wellbeing. Thanks to supporters, World Vision is helping children, like Sofia, find relief and continue their education during conflict.

Children like Sandra - facing discrimination

Sandra, 12, was abandoned by her father and brothers when she was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Life became even more difficult when her mother became sick and died, forcing Sandra’s older sister, Rebecca, to drop out of school to care for her. 

Sandra's condition means she needs medication and regular therapy that they can’t afford. But now she is a sponsored child and she receives the support she needs.

World Vision provides counselling and training to help her sister start a small business and generate an income. Sandra is also getting help to become certified as a person with a disability so the family can receive government assistance.

Children like Sumaiya - escaping child marriage

Sumaiya, 17, lives in a rural town in Bangladesh where more than 52% of girls are married before the age of 18.

Her parents moved away to find jobs, leaving her under the care of her uncle and aunt. "My uncle and aunt came and asked me to get ready as a prospective groom and his family we coming to see me with a marriage proposal," says Sumaiya with tears in her eyes.

But Samaiya didn't give up hope and took the brave step to ask for help from an Adolescent Club. They all visited Sumaiya's house, telling her family about the devastating consequences of child marriage and convinced them to call off the wedding.
