Towards a world where no child is left behind
World Vision welcomes today’s launch by the UK Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, of a flagship global campaign to end the institutionalisation of children and ensure that every child has access to safe and nurturing family-based care. The protection and care of vulnerable children requires collective actions, and we are pleased that this initiative aims to do that by bringing together governments from both developed and developing nations.
The UK government is making a historic move towards becoming a global leader in championing children’s rights, both domestically and internationally. By prioritising the needs of the most vulnerable children, they are ensuring that no child is left behind. The UK has the potential to lead the way in supporting children everywhere. Partnering with children and young people, particularly those with lived experience, will be essential in ensuring the success of care reform. We are encouraged to see the steps the UK is taking in this direction, supported by organisations like World Vision.
World Vision brings 75 years of experience of working with children and families across more than 100 countries. We have witnessed both the best and the worst examples of children’s care systems and have been actively involved in the deinstitutionalisation and care reform processes. We have also worked to address the root causes of family separation and institutionalisation. We understand the severe harm institutional care inflicts on children’s development and recognise the importance of strengthening families, tackling the underlying causes of institutionalisation, challenging harmful social norms, and building robust child protection systems to prevent the need for alternatives to parental care.
World Vision believes that supporting parents and primary caregivers by equipping them with the necessary knowledge and skills for positive parenting, conflict resolution and child development improves the family dynamic and prevents family breakdown. Strengthening the community network and wider protective environment around children minimises the risk of children being separated unnecessarily.
This initiative provides an unprecedented opportunity to create real, lasting change for children worldwide. Together, we can ensure that children receive the care they deserve while building systems that support families and promote foster care alternatives, making orphanages and children’s homes a relic of the past. We look forward to collaborating with governments and partners globally to bring this vision to life.
